He was hauled before the court for not supporting his daughter

JOHANNESBURG: The Johannesburg Family Court said yesterday that a DNA test has confirmed that Mbuso Mandela is the father of Gugu Kheswa’s three-year-old daughter.

This comes after Mandela, who was hauled before the court for not supporting his daughter, requested a paternity test during his last hearing on February 21.

The little girl’s mother had asked the court to compel her former lover to pay child support.

A month earlier, the 26-year-old grandson of Nelson Mandela was arrested for failing to support his daughter.

Reports suggested that Mandela inherited R4 million from his grandfather’s estate.

Kheswa said: “The reason I agreed to do the paternity test is because I wanted what is best for my child.

“I am happy that this process is final, going through it was tedious and draining.”

Now that paternity has been confirmed, Kheswa said she still intended to press on with court action to compel Mandela to support their daughter.

“I feel hopeful and want the matter to get resolved on paper so that my daughter will get everything that she is entitled to and needs.”

Kheswa, who is desperate to engage a state-funded lawyer, said there would be a financial investigation into the estate of Mandela’s parents and his brother, Ndaba Mandela, who has been subpoenaed to appear in court.

The child support matter will be heard on May 10.
