SHOW OF MILITARY POWER
The display of the military capability of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is the highlight of the Rand Show, which attracts thousands of people from throughout the country.
According to Siphiwe Dlamini, SANDF head of communication, the display of the military force at the Rand Show is part of the broader strategy to help members of the public to have a better understanding of what the defence force is all about.
“My principals (Secretary for Defence Dr Sam Gulube and SANDF chief General Solly Shoke) have been challenged by the Commanderin-Chief President Jacob Zuma to promote the SANDF in general.
“We were challenged by the Commander-in-Chief during the Armed Forces Day in 2014 to give life to the SANDF.
“Our participation in the Rand Show and other public engagements are part of the bigger programme to carry out that instruction issued by the Commander-in-Chief.
“The SANDF enjoys support across all strata of our society. It continues to play its role to defend the territorial integrity of the country with distinction. Events such as the display of the military capabilities at the Rand Show are not just done for fun.
“In addition to our out-reach programme in schools and elsewhere, this event helps our young people to realise that the defence force is an ideal place for countless career opportunities. Whether you want to be an engineer, a medical doctor, a pilot, a technician, a plumber or a wielder, the defence force is a place for you.
“Over time, our people are beginning to realise that when we speak about members of the defence force, we are not just talking about people who carry guns.
“Members of the defence force do much more than that. People can and do develop great careers in the defence force. It is a great place, where we pay you as we train you,” added Dlamini.
