BMW’s R1200 GS now with two style packages

- MOTORING STAFF

BMW’s ever-popular adventure tourer, the R1200 GS, has been given a number of technology and spec updates for 2017.

Dynamic “Next Generation” ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) sees the suspension damping automatically adapting to the riding condition, and a self-levelling function now automatically compensates for the extra weight of a pillion passenger or luggage.

Model year 2017 also sees the addition of a judder damper on the transmission output shaft and a revision of the selector drum actuator and transmission shafts.

The updated R1200 GS offers Rain and Road riding modes and Automatic Stability Control, or optionally Riding Modes Pro featuring additional road and offroad modes, Hill Start Control, and ABS brakes and Dynamic Traction Control which respectively allow safer braking and acceleration even when the bike’s banked.

For the first time, customers can order the bike in two style packages: Exclusive and Rallye. The offroad-biased Rallye’s suspension is stiffened and gets added travel, the seat is designed for easier moving around in off-road riding, and the bike gets a lower-cut windshield, a radiator guard, frame guard, wide enduro footrests, and cross-spoke wheels. It’s available in Lupine Blue metallic.

The road-focussed Exclusive, painted in Iced Chocolate metallic, gets cast wheels and BMW’s standard windscreen and seat.

Mechanically the 1200 GS is unchanged and power still comes from the air/liquid-cooled boxer with outputs of 92kW and 125Nm, but with an altered catalytic converter and engine management to meet the latest EU4 noise and emission regulations.

Prices are R238 990 for the standard R1200 GS, and R241 990 for either the Exclusive or Rallye.
