Safeguard UCT’s art

-

I HAVE to say I disagree with the DA shadow minister of higher education Ms Belinda Bozzoli asking for UCT to immediately “unban” the artworks that have been removed from the campus “Furore over temporary removal of artworks for safekeeping” (Cape Times Tuesday, May 2).

I would have said unless those asking for the artworks to be put back on the walls can guarantee their safety there needs to be a lot more discussion on this.

Those paintings that were burnt or vandalised in the fees must fall riots on the campus were not all so called colonialist paintings and some were apparently from black artists. So in times of rioting and mayhem, how is UCT supposed to secure its artworks?

That is why an alumnus removed his collection to a safer campus, so it will be interesting to see the outcome of this debate, but I am behind UCT in keeping the art safe until guarantees are given. In the past we have staunchly defended the dream of a better life for all, but Zuma is making that impossible. We are embarrassed and have no defence.
