We should honour our moms every day

- Nozigqi Ndebele and Ngawodwa Bomela Rock Girl

Yesterday was Mother’s Day, a day celebrated all over the world to honour mothers and all that they do for us.

Rock Girls took to the streets of Cape Town to talk to people about their mothers, or their children, and how they were spending their day. We found everyone had a different idea of Mother’s Day and how to celebrate it.

Rizah, a mother from Milnerton, was spoilt by her children with breakfast in bed, flowers and a facial.

Ross, a student from Minnesota, is a big fan of Mother’s Day because he feels his mother does so much for him and it’s nice to give something in return. However, being so far away meant their normal brunch date had to be replaced with a phone call.

But sometimes, giving gifts can be pricey.

Sarah, a student from Green Point, was feeling guilty because she was planning to send her mother flowers yesterday but could not afford them due to the inflated prices.

While some of the people we interviewed thought Mother’s Day should be every day, not only one day a year, it was agreed that mothers needed to be celebrated. “My mother is my rock,” commented Sadie, from Minnesota.

“She showed me how to be the best version of myself,” said Yvonne from Elsies River.

It’s important to note that not only biological mothers should be honoured on this day – there are others that fill the roles of mothers and deserve that love and gratitude as well. For example grannies, older sisters, aunties and maybe even fathers.

Zamanje, from Orange Street, is a big sister but has taken on the responsibilities of the household after her mother passed away. She says all the lessons in love, God and being independent made her the mother figure she is today.

To all the mothers, and those who take on the role of mothers, we thank you for guiding us, loving us and never complaining about raising us.

On days like Mother’s Day we can actively show our unconditional love for you – even though we feel it every day.
