Sea cadets celebrate Youth Day

-

AS A visiting South African who lives in the US, how nice it was to see a country celebrate its youth with a public holiday on June 16, 2017. However, instead of watching the SABC news and seeing youth and adults engaged in service activities aimed at the betterment of the youth, I saw speeches and gatherings that showed bored youth being required to sit still.

Compare this with the wonderful activity that my wife and I were invited to participate in at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Rondebosch where a group of about 150 sea cadets from the TS Woltemade in Lakeside blanketed the hospital campus and cleaned it up,

These youth were not only engaged in an activity to better the lives of children, but were making a meaningful contribution to their society and at the same time enjoying each other’s company in a positive way.

I was saddened to see no media at this activity where the youth could be seen being productive. Chris Whitehead Arizona, US
