The Dynamic Voices, featuring the cream of Cape Town vocalists in Jarrad Ricketts, Robin Pieters, Lana Crowster and Elwira Standili, performed at the 17th Sekunjalo Edujazz Concert at the Artscape on Saturday evening.
THE Artscape was a hive of activities as music lovers were treated to a spectacle during the 17th Sekunjalo Edujazz Concert at the weekend.
Each year the musical spectacular grows in importance with its primary function being fundraising to support about 75 primary and secondary schools.
The music programmes also ensure that the next generation of entertainment professionals get their best shot.
Cherie Hendricks, corporate affairs and sustainability director at African Equity Empowerment Investments Limited, a Sekunjalo Group Company, and a key supporter of the initiative, said: “To continue the rich tradition of jazz music as an art form and a means with which to capture the country’s current narrative, preserving it for future generations, we need to provide the means for our youth to be able to learn and practise their musical skills.”
The line-up for this year included the Sekunjalo Edujazz Big Band, The Foster Kids and The Dynamic Voices featuring fan favourites such as the Voice SA finalist Robin Pieters, Idols contestant Elwira Standili, crooner Jarrad Rickets (whose fan base extends around the world), and popular singer, songwriter and music producer Lana Crowster, who won the inaugural espYoungLegends competition last year.
In 2001, musical director Donovan Witten shared his vision of developing jazz music among the schoolchildren on the Cape Flats with Sekunjalo and Independent Newspapers executive chairman Dr Iqbal Survé.
