‘Whackhead’ ready to get Capetonians revving

- Jamal Grootboom

CAPE Town mornings are going to get whackier.

KFM radio recently unveiled their new line-up which sees Highveld radio DJ Darren “Whackhead” Simpson leading the breakfast show on Kfm. He is best known for his off-kilter personality and funny prank calls and he is ready to get you up and going in the morning.

We chatted to Simpson to get the inside scoop.

What’s the feeling in the Kfm 94.5 camp ahead of Monday’s debut breakfast show?

Very excited, the buzz around the building is incredible.

What kind of prep has gone into the all-new breakfast show?

We have been prepping for a couple of weeks already. A new team needs to learn to dance together, but there is a natural chemistry among the team which makes the process so much easier.

What kind of money is going into the show in terms of marketing/ publicity?

I haven’t a clue, but the support from all departments is amazing.

What do you think will set your show apart from the others in Cape Town?

We are a bunch of fun-loving people and our main aim here is to be entertaining, informative and engaging – the three most important ingredients for a morning radio show.

What are you going to do to maintain high energy levels for hosting both drive shows – KFM 94.5 and 947?

I naturally don’t sleep more than 4 hours a day. I guess I am just a workaholic.

How do you respond to critics who say hosting a Johannesburg afternoon drive show from Cape Town is not practical? That there will be a disconnect with the audience and possibly your team?

There is absolutely no disconnect with my team and there certainly won’t be a disconnect with the audience. I have been doing it on and off for six weeks already.

What are the grand plans for Kfm 94.5 breakfast show?

There are so many big plans for this show and Kfm.

We want to get this show and the station back to the No 1 position in the market. What time is bed-time for the team?

Everyone is different and will work out what works best for them. Doing a breakfast show you have to make many sacrifices. The first thing that suffers is your social life.
