Girl Guides helped

-

WHAT an incredible day we had on July 18 celebrating Mandela Day and setting a world record by making 5 167 vetkoek!

There was an incredible hive of activity in the Pinelands Guide Hall where adult leaders, teddies, brownies, guides, rangers, young leaders, Trefoil Guilders, GSG members, parents, siblings and friends came together to make this record possible.

Everyone worked so hard and it was awesome to see so many kids actively involved. Spirits were high and the atmosphere was electric.

A huge incredible thank you to Butler’s Pizza for being absolute rock stars and donating not only 120kg of dough, jam and oil, but supplying us with a further 60kg in the afternoon when we ran out of dough... twice. We would not have been able to set this record without Darren and his team at Butler’s Mowbray!

To everyone who donated dough, jam, curry mince, roller towels and oil .... thank you.

Every single donation, big or small, is appreciated so, so much.

Thanks especially to those who gave of their time.

We had 149 volunteers help throughout the day.

We asked for 67 minutes but many of you gave much, much more.

We were able to donate nearly 2 000 vetkoek, feeding over 1 000 people atdifferent charities/organisations.

These were: Founders Educare in Khayelitsha, Safe House Trust in Fish Hoek, Happy Valley Shelter in Simon’s Town, 7de Laan Informal settlement in Silversands, Sunset Retirement Centre in Muizenberg, Malachi House in Richwood, Sawas House in Pinelands, Blikkiesdorp informal settlement, The Haven Homeless Shelter, Eleanor Murray old age home, Somerset West Shelter and Bothasig SAPS.

Girl Guides Cape West came together in the true spirit of guiding, to help other people, and it felt great. Tanya Prinsloo Bothasig
