The sensible in the country, please help find a way out of SABC quagmire

- Sandile Dikeni

THE SABC not at work? How are we going to get the news? Between you and me, I like workers’ rights but I can’t help but wonder how we’re going to get the news when the news workers are not working.

It does not sound like an informed moment for us.

Listen, the SABC isn’t the only news institution but it is quite something when it comes to narrating the daily happenings in this charming democracy.

And when the public broadcaster’s workers aren’t there, where are we going to see the happenings in this beautiful country? I’m just asking. I’m pleading for the thinking democrats to carefully consider this and try to find a way out of it. Well, it is not our most healthy moment economically and the workers are the hardest hit. Still, no news is bad news. That is general knowledge. I’m pleading for the sensible in the country to find a path out of the quagmire. With patience and humble thought, I happen to know that we’re going to discover an amicable way out of this discomfort. Please let’s find a solution.

I’m also suggesting that a solution is a charming way out of this awkwardness. I like solutions, especially in Mandela Month. I guess that’s also the reason for my discomfort.

Between you and me, I used to work for the SABC, producing for AM Live at SAfm, which was a most amazing and dynamic moment in post-apartheid democracy. There was never a moment when a strike or nastiness was considered. I remember people saying my voice was as amazing as my thought processes. I liked that very much. Hey, I was a producer for Sally Burdett and John Maytham, two of the greatest presenters at the time.

Hein Marais is the chap who introduced me to the station. AM Live is where I heard about the dispute at the SABC. As I said, I am a chap that does mind the oppression of workers but please, not in Mandela Month.

How are we going to see the many great moments of a South African exhibiting that inner charm that we posses so humbly? Please dismiss this as me saying the timing is all wrong. In other words I’m suggesting there is nothing wrong with the first few days in August. The first few days please, not the whole month because it is Women’s Month. We must show the world we respect our women The SABC must show us that.

On an aside, I am also pleading with the corporation to show some diligence in the matter. I haven’t researched the issue but I’m kind of pleading that our thinking people remember the glory of Nelson Mandela and in their considerations, show the awesome respect that this month deserve. I’m pleading that our deepest sensibilities take control of this tender moment and guide us to the depths of bright soul.

I know we can. I have a feeling that Madiba’s soul will probably smile at our tenderness during this tender month.

The idea here is not that we hug conservatism because of some “holiness” of reactionary thought. I’m rather pleading for an inner sensitivity to take a stroll with the graces of this amazing country. It’s a beautiful moment that knows how to stroll through the graces of time. It’s a time that does not know the darkness of blind minds but rather eloquently screams for the grace of patience.

I know we are capable of making the world understand the depths of this humble country.

We owe it to our democratic consciousness that our country understand the bigger part of our humility. I know it’s difficult to achieve this, but we can.

I’m also pleading with the SABC to approach this moment with that extra bit of mind it deserves.

It’s important that we exhibit a refusal to hug the silliness of time with a grace it doesn’t deserve. It’s not easy but it is necessary in order for the world to see that we aren’t merely into money but possess the depths of this world.

It’s not an impossibility but it is a necessity. It isn’t going to be like walking in the park but rather a delicate jive with the sensitivities of life. Inside my crooked inward there’s the knowledge that it’s possible.

I’m pleading with you, let’s make it possible. Please.

As I said, I’m a chap that does mind the oppression of workers but please not during Mandela Month
