Restaurant:The Mess Napier Street, Green Point

The Mess Restaurant is perfect for hosting birthday dinners or just a night out with family and friends, sharing food and stories

is suitable for an intimate lunch or supper but also caters for larger groups, including families. As I entered, the friendly staff directed me to a seat next to one of the restaurant’s big windows.

Not much of a view besides the cars parked outside but there is more than enough happening inside to keep you entertained.

Our waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu, she had already tasted every dish on it since the restaurant opened in September. The gin cocktail came highly recommended, so that’s exactly what I sipped on while waiting for our food to arrive.

For starters we had the yoghurt and thyme flat bread with three kinds of mezze: confit duck rillette and pickled beetroot, white bean and tahini pate, pine nut and mint vinaigrette and pickled goats’ cheese with Moroccan dukkah. We also tried the beef tataki-seared angus beef tenderloin, ponzu dressing, mooli and cucumber salad.

For the mains we had pork belly-confit crackling pork belly, braised red cabbage, smoked apple, fennel jus, braised baby vegetables.

We also tried the beef fillet with fries, the aubergine melanzanegrilled aubergine, fior de latte, tomato ragout, pine nut and Parmesan crumble.

I thoroughly enjoyed the food however, by meal number three I really needed another clean side plate which our waitress later replaced.

Other dishes from the menu to choose from include the saffron braised lamb neck, creamy polenta and braised baby vegetables.

If you are in the mood for Cape Malay there is the vegetable curry, smoked apricot couscous, flat bread and tomato chilli jam.

There is also three desserts to choose from which include dark chocolate lava cake, crème brulee and fromage blanc and vanilla panna cotta, meringue shards, seasonal berries and sorbet.

The menu is reasonably priced and you can enjoy sharing your meal while being entertained by live music on Friday nights.

The Mess is perfect for hosting birthday dinners or just a night out with family and friends, sharing food and stories.

What I love about sharing platters is that you don’t have to worry about someone else’s meal looking better than yours because everyone at the table can enjoy the same great meal. It’s not messy at all.
