Oligopoly is the word

-

CURRENTLY monopoly (relating to a person or a business that has exclusive possession or control over the supply of a commodity) capital, especially the white version, is widely used terminology, as crafted by Bell Pottinger. I am surprised that no economist has made the effort to point out that the term used is not correct since SA definitely has more than One=Mono stinking rich individual or firm. Therefore the term oligopoly (relating to a number of individuals or firms that has possession or control over the supply of a commodity) should be used.

The colour of such oligopolistic capital definitely covers all colours of the rainbow and is definitely not only white. It is furthermore important to note that white light has to go through a prism to display the different colours of the rainbow and if bound together it will form white light again. Thus from that angle, to point out that white is made up of all colours, the reference to white is correct and the term should then be white oligopolistic capital. Truly, we are a rainbow nation.

Most importantly flowing from this analysis is the question, if oligopoly capital is a bad thing, what do we do about it. The simple economic answer is, generate more competition. Competition is the antidote to monopolies or oligopolies in whatever form, not just capital. Therefore, what SA needs to grow and generate decent sustainable employment is less regulation in all sectors which will attract more investment, local and foreign. Jacques D van Zyl Roggebaai
