Donation of shoes
THE Coega Development Corporation (CDC) together with First Automotive Works (FAW), a R600 million automotive manufacturer located in Zone 2 of the Coega SEZ, concluded Mandela Month with a donation of over 400 pairs of school shoes to pupils from Coega Primary School, Wells Estate.
The wonderful gesture by both FAW and the CDC is a continuation of previous corporate social responsibility projects, where six schools in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro have benefited.
Over R200 000 worth of school supplies have been given to the Nelson Mandela Bay schools over the past three years, benefiting in particular schools located in Motherwell and Wells Estate areas, which are adjacent to both FAW and CDC.
The beneficiaries include: Fumisikoma Primary, Melisizwe Primary, Imbasa Primary, Empumalanga Primary, Mdengentonga Primary and Coega Primary School.
“As good corporate citizens we certainly hope that we can continue demonstrating Nelson Mandela’s care and empathy when it comes to local communities in dire need of our assistance,” concluded Dr Ayanda Vilakazi.
The CDC at the start of this year signed a memorandum of agreement with the Council for the Build Environment (CBE) that will see the CBE sponsor the CDC maths & science programme.
The CBE investment towards the programme will fund 75 maths and science pupils of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro and the commitment will run for a period of three years.
To date the programme has been fully funded by the CDC touching the lives of 322 pupils since its inception in 2013.
These students are currently registered in institutions of higher learning around the country and some of them attended the signing ceremony.
Since inception, the programme has proved to be a success. In the 2016 class, which consisted of 48 pupils, the programme achieved a 100% pass rate for physical science and 98% for mathematics.
In 2015, the programme, consisting of 50 pupils, obtained a 98% pass rate for both subjects. Simlindele Manqina CDC Communications Officer
