A FLAT was burnt down following eviction orders by Sohco Property Investments at the Steen Villa complex in Steenberg. This after three residents were evicted yesterday.

The Cape Times spoke to two of the evictees.

Sarah Scheepers, 69, said she felt humiliated after being publicly evicted.

“I have a seven-month-old baby living in the house and they did not even care, they forced my front door open and smacked my other son.

“They did not even want to give the children’s bottle.”

Scheepers said the locks of her door had been changed and she was unaware where her removed belongings were.

Mandisa Ndzila, 42, said she was on her way to a new job when she got a call from a neighbour alerting her about her furniture being thrown into a truck.

“I have been living here since 2010. I have three kids, one of them is at school, the other one is 4 months old and the eldest one (who was staying with her boyfriend) is now staying with us. I paid R500 last month. This month I made arrangements and I paid R300. I have nowhere else to go.

“I am feeling bad because my children have nothing for food because the fridge was taken,” she added.

Attorney Rafeek Hendricks said that the high court has adjourned the date of the appeal until both parties can agree on a date.

“There was an urgent application to request reasons for the judgment.

“The date given for Friday has been adjourned until both parties agree.

“Any other interested party that would like to join (because we are dealing with children and women) is encouraged to join,” he added.

Despite not being one of the evicted residents, Shafiek Herman said he would still stand by those affected.

“This can happen to anybody, I also don’t work.

“Tomorrow this could be me, so I will stand with the people.

“It was especially sad to see an old woman being thrown out. Where must the people go?”

Western Cape Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said no serious injuries were reported. “Police members were on the scene and action was taken to disperse the crowd,” he said.

Last night police remained in the area to monitor the situation.
