Magaqa’s widow pens moving tribute to him

- Samkelo Mtshali

THE wife of slain former ANC Youth League secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa said she could not imagine living life without him by her side.

Magaqa, who died earlier this month, was buried in his village of Ibisi in uMzimkhulu on Saturday.

In a moving tribute penned to her husband and delivered at the funeral by a relative, Nomagugu Thobela, Gugu Magaqa said her husband would always be present in her life.

“My dear husband, my superman, I prayed for you before I met you and when I met you I quickly learnt that you were far more amazing than anything that I had ever prayed for.

“I truly believed that God placed us in each other’s lives. He helped us find each other every day,” Thobela said.

She could not imagine venturing through life without her husband, hand in hand. “I am amazed by you and the incredible man that you were, your integrity, your love, your wisdom. You were a strong an amazing man of God.

“I am proud of you Gaba (Magaqa’s clan name). My love, I saw you fighting for your life in hospital. We prayed together and you even promised me that we would soon be going home together. Little did I know that you meant eternal home, but I know that you’re in a safe and better place, you’re now with God,” said Thobela.

Mapolo Dlamini, Magaqa’s uncle, said he would never forget Magaqa’s words while he lay in his hospital bed.

His nephew had told him that he was content knowing that he had worked hard for all his possessions and had not stolen them from anybody.

“He told me that when you have possessions, you must be able to sleep peacefully because you have toiled hard for them.”

Magaqa’s nephew, Yolakazi Dlamini, agonised over the fact that her uncle had left behind four young children.

On the night Magaqa was shot she had cooked him a meal to impress him, she said, but began worrying when he had not arrived home by 7pm – only to be told that he had been shot.

“My uncle gave us plenty of hope, because when he started talking while in hospital, my grandmother was so happy. We all thought he was going to live.

“When I visited him in hospital, he told me to be strong and believe in God. When I said goodbye, I didn’t know it was my last goodbye to him.”

Magaqa’s mother, Agnes, also wrote a moving tribute to her son. This was read by a relative, Thobeka Dlamini.

“Sindiso, my child, you have left me deeply pained. You were everything to me.

“I didn’t know that when you said you’d leave me… you meant this pain you’ve left me with.”

She said her son had felt pain for two months in hospital and at times she wanted to trade places with him so she could feel his pain for him.

“I will always miss and love you, my child, “Magaqa’s mother wrote.
