Albinism doccie, chat
DISCRIMINATION on the basis of albinism is one of the issues that will be addressed at a screening and discussion of the documentary As We See It at Stellenbosch University Museum tomorrow.
This 30-minute documentary focuses on life with albinism, visual impairment associated with this condition, as well as the educational challenges that people with albinism face.
While South Africa is moving towards an inclusive education model, pupils with albinism in mainstream schools may face discrimination or practical challenges such as seeing on the board, while those in special schools may struggle with social inclusion.
The documentary features Vuyiswa Kama, 66, Delicia de Vos, 40, Sonele Ntsundwana, 22, and Tono Blaai, 14, who discuss their respective experiences with albinism in mainstream and special schooling.
The documentary’s director and producer, Shirley Gunn, will be available for a Q&A session with Delicia de Vos after the screening. Snacks and wine will be served.
The event is hosted by Stellenbosch University Museum, the Human Rights Media Centre and the Disability Unit in Stellenbosch University’s Centre for Student Counselling and Development, Division of Student Affairs.
Time: 1-2pm. Venue: Stellenbosch University Museum, 52 Ryneveld Street. Entrance is free. RSVP: Mr Ricky Brecht, rickyb@sun.ac.za Ricky Brecht Stellenbosch University
