Youth legacy project

- Sarah Martin Castle of Good Hope

THE CASTLE of Good Hope has joined forces with the Department of Defence to deliver an inspiring legacy project for the youth and the public as a whole.

It was important to have the media and youth attend the event, as it is aimed at inspiring the youth to learn about the true history of South Africa.

Already rolled out in 72 schools, the project has seen a timeline developed and installed on a wall in schools, showing the different events that took place at the Castle of Good Hope over 350 years (The Castle has just commemorated its 350th year).

The project will see the installation of the timeline at 300 other schools across the country. This timeline is part of a move to ensure that young South Africans study the true history of South Africa as well as become part of the efforts needed to achieve the overarching objective to heal and reconcile the nation.

The event also saw a temporary mural of this timeline being unveiled at the Castle. The aim of this project is to form part of a lasting legacy for the youth as our real and rich SA history becomes more and more part of the school curriculum. In light of this and in celebration of Heritage Month – it is important that we reflect on the history of South Africa, as it is the heritage of the youth.

The next phase of the project will see dialogue sessions where the youth and the public will come together in discussion, national competitions where the youth will challenge one another to see what they have learnt from this project, as well as interactive campaigns at schools.
