‘Gang boss’ shot at Cape Town airport
COMMUNITY Safety MEC Dan Plato has condemned a suspected gang hit at Cape Town International Airport yesterday.
The shooting, after 5am, left two people injured, including suspected gang boss Jerome “Donkey” Booysens.
Plato said: “I condemn in the strongest possible manner the shooting which took place at the upper roadway of the Cape Town International Airport.
‘‘The brazen shooting, alleged to be gang-related, has injured an innocent bystander as well as a well-known alleged gang boss – who the bullets were apparently intended for,” Plato said.
He has called for an in-depth police investigation, assisted by intelligence agencies, saying the shooting at a national key point showed “total disregard for the law and lives of the public”.
“The investigation’s scope has to ensure that not only those responsible for the shooting face the full might of the law, but also that the reasons for the shooting and those implicated in these reasons are investigated and held accountable for any illegal or criminal actions.”
Plato said he visited the airport following the incident and s were “adequately geared to help ensure public safety through incident prevention and early detection”.
Police spokesperson Vishnu Naidoo said: “At about 5.15am, a man, approximately 50 years of age, was shot and wounded at the drop-off area at Cape Town International Airport.
‘‘The man was at the dropand-go section of the airport when occupants in an unknown sedan opened fire on him and fled.”
Another victim was struck by a stray bullet. The condition of the victims is unknown at this stage.
Police are investigating two charges of attempted murder.
