Modise is a new Treasury deputy D-G

THE NATIONAL Treasury yesterday announced the appointmen­t of Mampho Modise as the new deputy director-general for public finance. Modise was formerly a chief director for strategy and risk management in the department’s Asset and Liability Management division. In that role, she was responsibl­e for the developmen­t and implementa­tion of a strategy and risk management framework to monitor and manage public sector liability portfolios. She also managed the South African government’s relations with global rating agencies. Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba said yesterday: “In our quest as government to transform the economy, we are also headstrong about women empowermen­t, particular­ly young, capable, knowledgea­ble, experience­d and educated women such as Modise.” Modise completed her tertiary training at the University of Pretoria, where she obtained a BCom Economics, BCom Honours Econometri­cs, Mcom Econometri­cs (cum laude) and a PhD in Economics. She started working for the South African Reserve Bank in 2004, where she was an intern and progressed to be an economist. Modise left the Reserve Bank in 2009 to work for the National Treasury, where she started as a senior economist in the Economic Policy division. She was soon promoted to director: fiscal policy, then to the chief director: strategy and risk management. The Treasury said that further announceme­nts for vacant executive positions would be be made in due course. – Siseko Njobeni
