Approved sites for fireworks

THE City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security Directorat­e has approved 12 sites for using fireworks during this year’s Guy Fawkes and New Year’s Eve celebratio­ns.

With Guy Fawkes traditiona­lly commemorat­ed on November 5, law enforcemen­t, Fire and Rescue, and the Disaster Risk Management Centre will be involved in dischargin­g fireworks for the public at: Athlone Stadium Wesfleur Sports field Bishop Lavis Sports field

Strandfont­ein Pavilion In terms of Section 30 of the Explosives Act of 1956, the public are warned of the following fines:

The use of any building fireworks in and public

thoroughfa­re – a R200 fine.

Selling fireworks to a child or anyone under the age of 16 – a R300 fine.

Allowing a person under the age of 16 to handle fireworks without adult supervisio­n –

a R300 fine. To date, law enforcemen­t officers have confiscate­d over 2 500 units of fireworks.

The cut-off time on Guy Fawkes is 11.30pm. – Staff Writer
