Towering Transformers to take over GrandWest

- Staff Writer

IT IS less than a month until the Transformers Exhibition features GrandWest.

It will see Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Megatron and the Rescue Bots descend on Sun Exhibits, GrandWest for the last leg of the Transformers Exhibition’s South African tour.

The interactive exhibition, taking place from November 10 until January 21, features 14 animatronic Transformers, nine sculptures scaled between 2m and 9m and another 20 statues varying in size.

They are made from reused car parts, metal and other repurposed materials. The display spans over 2 500m2 of floor space and takes over 20 days to build.

The walk- through display depicts the rise of the Transformers from the 1980s animated generation to the new age Rescue Bots to the incredible scrap metal sculptures that represent the Transformers young children know today.

The exhibition also features a children’s area where young fans can have their photos taken with Bumblebee and Optimus Prime characters, colour in, participate in Lego building, play games, get temporary Transformers tattoos, watch movies and go wild on a jumping castle.

With a free downloadable Transformers workbook, the Transform- ers Exhibition is not only a fun-filled family outing, but an educational experience too.

Using Transformers as the theme, the 17-page workbook covers the foundation phase subjects of maths, language and life skills to keep children engaged before, during and after they have attended the exhibition.

GrandWest’s PR and promotions manager, Elouise Matthys, said the Transformers Exhibition would be one of the highlights of the festive season entertainment line-up for children at GrandWest.

“Sun Exhibits will be completely transformed for this exhibition which offers parents a fantastic option for keeping children entertained.

“The exhibition should also be of interest for schools taking learners on end of year outings.”

Tickets are sold per entry slot, but visitors can spend as much time as they want at the exhibition, with the average visit taking about two hours.

The show features animated Transformers up to 2m in height made from old car parts, metal and repurposed materials. The Transformers were a range of toys which became the characters for an animated TV series. The exhibition brings the Transformers to life and provides the viewer with the opportunity to interact with Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Megatron and the Rescue Bots. This makes for a fab family outing and is bound to work up a sweat as you walk through the exhibition exploring the Transformer entities as part of “performance technology”. Family packages cost R89-R99. See www.webtickets.co.za. Three readers can win a family package by e-mailing simone@one-eyedjack.co.za by 6pm tomorrow with the subject line ToTT, and in the main body of the e-mail the name of your fave Transformer.

McCullagh and his group, the Harmonix, are paying tribute to the Swedish super troopers at Followspot’s Kalk Bay Theatre until November 11.
