Snyman’s ANC post in balance

- Mary Jane Mphahlele

THE ANC has remained tight lipped on the reasons behind the suspension of the party’s controversial Boland secretary, Jonton Snyman.

ANC Western Cape spokesperson Lionel Adendorf said the suspension of members of the party was an internal matter.

“The ANC in the Western Cape is not in a position to comment on a matter that is incomplete,” he said.

Western Cape secretary Faiez Jacobs said: “It’s an internal matter that needs to run his course and we would only comment once the process is complete.”

Snyman is understood to have been served with a suspension letter on Friday from Jacobs.

Jacobs apparently informed him of his immediate suspension, citing his failure to respond to a previous letter giving him notice of the party’s intention to suspend his membership.

Snyman was also requested in the letter to hand over all property belonging to the ANC in his possession, including office keys and computers with immediate effect.

Snyman is also not allowed to represent the ANC in any meeting or on any platform.

“You may not call, attend or officiate at any branch meeting,” the suspension letter from Jacobs says.

Snyman is no stranger to controversy and suspensions.

In 2014 he pleaded guilty to submitting a false insurance claim for his laptop, and in 2015 he was suspended for misconduct for failing to disclose his criminal record while standing for the position of Boland secretary.

Last year he was accused of plotting to unseat Marius Fransman as ANC chairperson in the province.

Yesterday, the Boland region said it was in the dark as to why their leader was suspended.

Boland regional spokesperson, Attwel Mbi, said even though there was animosity between Jacobs and Snyman, he did not know why he was suspended.

“Whoever took the decision, whoever is implementing it, the communication has not been brought to the regional committee so that we are aware. I don’t want to confirm or deny anything, but I am suspecting that a group of people sat and took the decision,” said Mbi.

“I also do not know whether it is personal or not, but this (suspension) is clearly conference fever” he added.

Mbi said Snyman would await his time to respond officially.
