9 killed on roads at weekend
NINE deaths, of which four were of pedestrians, were recorded on Cape roads over the weekend.
ER24 spokesperson Annine Siddall said a man was killed after a rider lost control of his motorcycle on Saturday.
“A man, believed to be in his 20s, was killed and another is in a critical condition after a rider lost control of his motorbike on the N1 in Worcester,” Siddall said.
The injured man is in a critical condition and was taken to Mediclinic Worcester, Siddall said.
A 50-year-old man was killed when he was knocked over by a truck. “The man was knocked down by a truck on the N1 about 7km outside Worcester, towards De Doorns on Friday evening at about 7pm.”
On Saturday afternoon a 2-year-old child was left in a critical condition after three vehicles collided. “Two people were killed and two were left in a critical condition after two bakkies and a motorbike collided on the R101 towards Franschhoek.
“The child and a man in a critical condition were taken to Paarl Provincial Hospital.”
An alcohol blitz nabbed 15 drunk drivers with the highest reading of 1.47mg/1000ml – six times over the legal limit.
Western Cape traffic chief Kenny Africa said 2 754 cars were stopped and seven other arrests made over the weekend during the alcohol blitz.
