City can’t speak to Mandla, but they’re definitely speaking to his club

CAPE Town City chairman John Comitis has confirmed that his team were interested in luring the services of Bafana Bafana midfielder Mandla Masango.

The former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder is currently on the books of Randers FC in Denmark. Last season he was on loan at SuperSport United.

“We spoke to Mandla. The problem is that he is committed. The transfer fee that his club are asking is beyond our reach. Right now we can’t talk to Mandla since it’s out of the transfer window, so we can only talk to his club,” Comitis explained.

Comitis also squashed rumours that City are chasing Mamelodi Sundowns forward Khama Billiat, with the Zimbabwean yet to renew his contract, which expires in June.

“I’m sure everyone will be interested in a player like Khama Billiat but right now he is not in our sights,” Comitis elaborated.

City have been struggling in the last few matches after commencing the season like a house on fire. They were on a five-match winless streak before they notched up a victory against Free State Stars last week.

Coach Benni McCarthy was also said to be under pressure to produce results.

“I have no reason to panic. Why should I panic? I’m number three on the log,” Comitis said. “I knew that this was going to come. Our problems are fixable. We believe in Benni and he has our full backing. Our problem is that we are not scoring goals but it will eventually come right.”

City have struggled in front of goals since losing marksman Lebogang Manyama, who joined Turkish outfit Kanyspor in September.

“We do have good players in our team but they haven’t reached the level of Manyama. Yes, the challenger is there. Teko Modise is starting to show his quality. He is top footballer,” Comitis said.
