Mkhize outlines vision for ANC should he win

- Loyiso Sidimba

ANC MEMBERS should accept the possibility that some of the disputes ahead of next month’s elective conference would not be resolved.

This was ANC treasurer-general Zweli Mkhize’s frank admission this week.

“I don’t expect all issues to be completely resolved before conference,” he said.

Mkhize said ahead of the provincial general councils he was hopeful that all disputes would be resolved.

Hundreds of ANC branches across the country have lodged disputes on the outcomes of their general meetings to nominate their preferred candidates for party leadership.

The former KwaZulu-Natal premier was speaking at a media questions and answers gathering in Sandton this week where he outlined his vision for the ruling party should he be elected its president next month.

Mkhize said a basic qualification was needed for ANC members to be elected at particular levels.

“We must institutionalise training from branch level,” he said.

The presidential hopeful said should he be elected ANC president he would strengthen the party’s research capacity, focus on implementing resolutions taken, create a system of accountability and build a membership system that is tamper-proof.

“The performance of leadership is important. Performing will make a huge impact,” said Mkhize.

He said ethical leadership needed to be preached in the ANC, calling on the governing party to create an image of clean governance and audit its weaknesses in government.

“Where we find corruption we must deal with it,” he explained.

Mkhize said he would ensure that the ANC was united to prevent splinter parties such as Cope and the EFF gaining ground.
