THE RCS Gugulethu Race, in partnership with the Cape Times, is set to take place on December 16 at the NY49 Stadium in Gugulethu, where thousands of runners and families from across the province are expected to participate.

Yesterday, the Cape Times interviewed Tyshia Johannes, a member of the RCS Gugulethu Athletics Club, who hails from Bishop Lavis.

Johannes has been running for over 30 years, participating with the likes of Wayde van Niekerk’s mother and stepfather, Odessa and Steven Swarts.

Her racing career faced a setback when she was diagnosed with tuberculosis.

After treatment, she trained for a year and coached youngsters from around the city.

She then joined the RCS Gugulethu Athletics Club in 2007, taking part in races all over the country.

“If I had not been diagnosed with TB I would have gone on to win the Olympics the following year. You feel the difference when you practise alone and when you compete on track.

“The camaraderie that we have with Gugs is just phenomenal. People accept you for who you are no matter what background you are from. I have learnt a lot from the people (as) a runner and how to organise races,” said Johannes.

Johannes recalls on average she runs over 50 races and marathons a year, including the Two Oceans Marathon.

Last year she ran just under 8 races a month, burning through 2 000km.

This year, she dropped to 27 races so far, and is excited to run more races before the end of the year.

Her favourite races include the 10km and 21km distances.

One of her best times came when she finished 3rd with a time of 5:40:00 in a 56km race, last year.

“Last year we did exceptionally well for the race. This year I would say we have a much bigger impact with the Cape Times being on board. I would like to see more runners that would like to have more exposure and join the races.

“Come out and enjoy with family and friends. You will get to see many different places in Gugulethu,” said Johannes.

Johannes will be at the NY49 Stadium in Gugulethu on Reconciliation Day, representing team RCS Gugulethu Athletics Club.
