A SOFT-SPOKEN matriculant made history at the Gatesville Melomed Hospital yesterday when she wrote her final matric exam paper while hospitalised.

Aasiya Badroodien, 18, from Penlyn Estate wrote her English creative writing exam in a private room after being admitted to hospital with a bad case of gastro.

Aasiya, a pupil at Rustenberg Girls High School, said she felt “nervous” when she heard she had to be booked into hospital on Sunday evening.

“It made me very anxious and nervous when I heard that I would have to be admitted to hospital the night before my final paper had to be written. The staff have been very helpful and they have been helping me throughout the night when I wasn’t feeling well,” she said.

Gatesville Melomed nursing manager Fathima Mahomed said Aasiya made history as this was the first time in the hospital’s 27 years that it had to accommodate such a situation.

“When I was doing my handover this morning I was informed that there was a student who wanted permission to write her final exams and they would get an invigilator. I said to my team that she is a brave girl,” Mahomed said.

Aasiya’s mother, Perween, said her daughter had since last Friday not been feeling well and after a visit to their GP, Aasiya was hospitalised on Saturday just after 4am.

“She was put on a drip for pain and when her fever came down, we were able to then go home on Saturday evening. She then had to come back to hospital on Sunday when she was again feeling unwell. They then had to admit her,” Perween said.

Aasiya said she would be taking a gap year once she completed Grade 12.

“After my gap year I will be studying speech therapy. I love working with children and I had speech therapy when I was younger,” she said
