Red flags over Foreshore proposal

- Fred Levy Cape Town

THE article by Lance Berelowitz must surely raise some red flags, as to the proposed redevelopment of the foreshore.

The headline for this piece propagates comparison of two very strangely similar solutions, in which one, (probably the Foreshore development) would end up as the road to nowhere, while that in Vancouver, would lead to somewhere.

If the Foreshore Freeway Precinct is to provide a “phalanx of residential towers”, one must shudder at the thought of the sight of such gap-toothed structures, dotted along the entire city frontage.

Plain ugly and no way to beautify this wonderful city.

And the provision of only 14% of the units, 450 out of a total 3 200, for affordable residential units is clearly a sop to satisfy the city council that it is being pro-poor.

That is laughably inadequate and another black mark against a floundering DA administration. What on Earth are they doing?

Further, Berelowitz believes that the completed freeways “simply punt the existing traffic congestion further down the road into Green Point”. So what is the purpose?

Finally, he raises the question as to why Mitchell du Plessis Associates, (MDA) was selected over other bidders when local commentators have gone on record that their submission “misses the mark in many ways” and “does not even meet the City of Cape Town’s own evaluation criteria”.

Red flags all over the place make it imperative that this proposal does not succeed in its present form.

Finish the unfinished bridge for starters and put a strong hold on the rest of the MDA madness.
