Cape Times

Our women ignored

-

IT IS surprising that a newspaper that serves the people of Cape Town and consistently beats the drum of equality does not even mention The Investec South African Women’s Open that was played at Westlake last week.

Not only were our world stars, Lee-Ann Pace and Ashleigh Buhai in attendance but girls from 15 other countries that made the trip to Cape Town to participate in our national open. It is disappointing that golf is considered a second stream sport by Independent newspapers and receives very little coverage.

We are doing our best to re-ignite women’s professional golf and showcase the international talent in the Mother City and it is regrettable that the sports editor of the Cape Times chooses to ignore the effort and achievement of our girls.

Well done Ashleigh Buhai for winning the 2018 Investec South African Women’s Open. Grant Wilson Chief Operating Officer Southern Africa PGA Tour

We do take women’s sport very seriously in the Cape Times, as I hope you have noticed. Grant Winter, our freelance golf writer, has done several pieces on Ashleigh Buhai and others. But I do sincerely apologise for the lack of coverage last week. It was an error on our part. As a big golf fan myself, I value your input very much, as I do from all our readers. – Ian Smit, Executive Editor, Sport
