‘Cold case campaign’ begins

MISSING Children SA has launched its “cold case campaign” where they will revisit all cases of missing children and people who have not been found.

The campaign was launched to follow up any leads, says Missing Children SA spokesperson Bianca van Aswegen.

“We are looking for any possible leads in the hope of finding the children. We are getting the status out there for awareness,” Van Aswegen said.

Missing Children SA was established in March 2007 in response to the kidnapping and murders of Sheldean Human, 7, from Pretoria, and Annestacia Wiese, 12, from Mitchells Plain.

Van Aswegen said the campaign would run over the next few weeks with awareness hashtag #StillNotFound.

The oldest case the organisation is revisiting is that of Dirk Booysen, 17, who went missing on March 10, 2000, in Gauteng after he went to have his bicycle fixed in Alberton.

“We are hoping that when people see these posters being circulated again, they will be vigilant and provide us with any information that could lead to positive results.

“So far, we have at least one tip-off for one of the children and together with police we are working tirelessly to get results,” Van Aswegen said.

Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said there is no waiting period for reporting a person missing to the nearest police station.

“Should you report a person to the police station and the police officer tells you to come back after 24 hours, demand to speak to the station commander,” he said.
