Apologies to cricket-loving South Africans for shameful action

-

ON BEHALF of my countrymen may I offer a sincere apology for the actions of members of my country’s cricket team.

I apologise to those who paid good money to enjoy the spectacle of the rivalry between our two sides at Newlands only to find out that one of them tried to cheat to gain an advantage and to all who witnessed this disgusting and degrading incident.

I am appalled at the actions of the Australian so-called “leadership group” who admitted to conspiring to cheat. Of course they’re now “ashamed” but only because they have been caught red-handed.

Those, including the captain, Steve Smith, who were responsible should be on the first plane home (following their defeat in this Test match) and I believe their playing careers for their country should be terminated forthwith. Their actions are inexcusable and unforgivable.

What lesson does this teach the thousands of children in the cricket world who would aspire to reach their potential in this great game and ultimately to represent their country?

I have enjoyed the quality of play in this series, despite the off-field tantrums and distractions, but this scandal has taken whatever icing there was on this series off the cake.

Assuming we can field a team of sportsmen to front up for the 4th Test in Joburg let’s hope we can have a game of cricket played as it should be. Until then I hold my head in shame, as should the conspirators, and I heartily apologise to the cricket-loving people of South Africa. Robin W Weaver Perth, Western Australia
