School’s recycling win
BERGVLIET Primary School has been awarded R30 000 in prize money for their ongoing glass recycling efforts.
The school was the regional winner in the The Glass Recycling Company (TGRC) competition. The school collected 61 833kg of glass bottles and jars last year.
The winning schools in the Western Cape hosted prize-givings, where the cheques were handed over to principals by TGRC national business development officer Innocent Godo.
The three top schools were selected in each region and received R30 000 (first prize for regional winner), R20 000 (regional runner-up) and R10 000 (regional third prize) respectively.
Kenridge Primary School walked away with second prize and Bay Primary School came third in the regional category. The three schools collected about 117 877kg of glass or 353 631 bottles and jars.
The goal of this competition was for schools in Gauteng, Western Cape, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, East London and Port Elizabeth to collect as many glass bottles and jars as possible for recycling.
Apart from placing glass banks at the schools, TGRC also supplied curriculum compliant material to enable teachers to facilitate a holistic view of the glass recycling process.
“We want to encourage the youth to look after the environment and make recycling a daily habit. Glass recycling requires so little effort from each of us and the impact it makes on the environment is vast.
“By running these competitions, we are hoping that learners, their parents, siblings and friends will make it a habit of recovering, reusing and recycling,” said Godo.
Throughout the competition, there were also monthly prizes awarded to the top-performing schools with the highest collection of glass per month in each region.
The 2018 Annual Schools Competition has already kicked off and schools are still able to enter.
The competition runs during the course of the year and will close on October 31. Schools can enter to win monthly cash prizes as well as the grand annual prize.
