Zoid zaps her third Safta

- Staff Writer

KAREN Zoid and Brainwave Productions won their third Safta in a row at the annual South African Film and Television Awards at Sun City on March 24.

Ahead of the 5th series of Republiek van Zoid Afrika (RZA) that kicks off on kykNET on May 10, Zoid says it means a lot to her and her team to be honoured by the NFVF (National Film & Video Foundation).

“It feels fantastic. I am grateful to have fans who love our work and happy the judges, whose opinions are held in high regard, acknowledge the show. The Brainwave Productions team consistently works as hard on every episode as the very first day. We do not take this process for granted.”

Carien Loubser, director and producer of RZA, says it takes blood, sweat and brilliance to make great television. “There are a lot of people who work long hours behind the scenes to make a special show. It’s great that our efforts have been rewarded in this way.”

The 5th RZA series will be broadcast from May 10 and features, among other guests, Johnny Clegg, Ross Learmonth of Prime Circle, Die Heuwels Fantasties, Patricia Lewis, Jo Black, Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Valiant Swart.

Zoid says the musical collaborations in this new series are extraordinary. “The musical director of the album, Theo Crous, and I are convinced this album is the best we have produced yet. RZA volume 5 will be released in July.

A Republiek van Zoid Afrika concert will be held at Menlyn Maine Sun Arena on June 15. Various guests from RZA series over the years will be performing, including Kahn Morbee (Parlotones), Francois van Coke, Jo Black, Zolani Mahola (Freshlyground), Vusi Mahlasela and more to be announced.

Keep an eye on Karen Zoid’s social media pages for an announcement about ticket sales.

Apart from the Saftas, Karen Zoid has received numerous awards over the years and has had more than 32 number one hit singles on iTunes.

She has performed with the likes of Annie Lennox, John Mayer and Metallica, and in 2004 both Time magazine and US News & World Report highlighted her role as an icon in the South African music industry.

The good news is that Zoid will be doing some big shows in Gauteng and Cape Town in June. She’s rarely diplomatic and inclined to tell it as it is. This was apparent when she first magically appeared out of nowhere 16 years ago with Afrikaners is Plesierig.

Maybe she gets our collective ear by telling us things we don’t want to know – but demand to hear! Yet it’s always the truth and that’s what ultimately shines through her critically acclaimed body of work. Zoid and her band will have you on the edge of your seat – don’t miss it!

Tour dates: June 1 and 2: Teatro, Monte Casino, Midrand. June 19 and 20: Artscape Opera House.
