Let’s meet on liquor
THE article written by Sandiso Phaliso titled “Cape traders demand permits to sell liquor” (Cape Times, Thursday, April 12) has reference.
It is important to understand that the mandate of the Western Cape Liquor Authority (WCLA) is to regulate the retail sales and micro manufacturing of liquor in terms of the Western Cape Liquor Act 4/2008 (as amended).
Since liquor is a regulated substance, there are certain criteria that applicants need to meet before a liquor licence can be granted.
The legislation makes provision for the following licence types: on consumption, off consumption, on and off consumption, micro manufacturing, event and temporary liquor licences.
The current legislation does not make provision for any other licence types or any permits to trade in liquor.
As indicated during the meeting, the Western Cape Liquor Authority will facilitate a meeting between the Vuma Liquor Traders’ Association and the Provincial Head of Liquor Control for SAPS in the province.
It was also further recommended that a meeting be arranged with the relevant departments in the City of Cape Town to discuss the zoning issues pertaining to licence applications. Nwabisa Mpalala Assistant director: Communication, Education and Stakeholder Relations Western Cape Liquor Authority
