Career expo opens new paths for Manenberg teenagers
THE Career Expo and ID Document handover programme for pupils of three high schools in Manenberg has opened a window through which they can explore various career and further education opportunities that beckon.
The expo was hosted by the Department of Home Affairs.
Speaking at the event at the Phoenix Secondary School’s hall, where pupils from the Silverstream and Manenberg high schools were present, Home Affairs Deputy Minister Fatima Chohan said she came from a similarly poor background as the pupils.
“The only thing that should set you apart from others is your drive to succeed. This is the message we want to send to you – just because you live in Manenberg and can’t go to these institutions of opportunity, we’ve brought them to you today.”
The University of the Western Cape (UWC) False Bay Technical Vocational Educational and Training, the Department of Social Development, the National Youth Development Agency and Harambee were among the organisations assisting pupils choose their career path.
“We want you to live your passion and understand that education is the key to opening up many doors,” she said.
Grade 12 pupil Lisay van Wyk, 17, from Silverstream High said: “I’m relieved that I got my ID document, because I need it. I want to become a police officer one day.”
Phoenix High teacher and emcee at the event, George Lodewyk, said: “The expo is like a new avenue to overcome the challenges the pupils have, especially the financial challenges.”
