City selection is fair

-

“ARE YOU covering up nefarious deeds, DA?” (Cape Times, May 15) by Professor David Rosenberg refers.

He appears to view his unsuccessful application to serve on the audit and performance committee of the City of Cape Town as evidence of “nefarious deeds” in the City’s administration.

For the record, Professor Rosenberg was one of a number of applicants interviewed for the one vacant position on the committee.

The selection panel, of which I was a member, considered the merits of each applicant before making a recommendation to council. We believe the person appointed is eminently qualified to serve in the position.

The audit and performance committee, which is fully functional, meets regularly to fulfil its roles and responsibilities in terms of the provisions of the Municipal Finance Management Act and the Local Government: Municipal Planning and Performance Management Regulations, among others. For Professor Rosenberg to suggest otherwise is simply demeaning of the independent persons serving on the committee. Alderman Ian Neilson Executive Deputy Mayor City of Cape Town
