Fugard’s first intern in the spotlight
XHOSA theatre activist Siphelo Mtshetsha, the first recipient of the Fugard Theatre director internship, hopes to make his first strides into the professional theatre world.
The Samora Machel resident was introduced to the performing arts in high school.
He later formed the Siphesakhe Youth Organisation (SYO) with other young people, to provide a safe space where the youth could identify and harness their talents in the performing arts.
Mtshetsha was awarded the director internship programme following his production Uloyiko, about a genocide that happened in Zimbabwe. It was showcased at the Zabalaza Festival this year.
He said that dedication, passion and faith were the cornerstones of his work in the performing arts world.
“Having been part of the Zabalaza Festival in the past, my work had often fallen short but with Uloyiko, there was widespread appreciation and positive feedback,” said Mtshetsha.
‘‘This is my first step into the professional theatre arena and what I take away here will be ploughed back into my work with SYO and theatre in informal areas.”
He said he has been shadowing director Greg Karvellas at the Fugard Theatre in the popular West End performance piece Significant Other, which is set to premiere for the first time in South Africa from May 30 to July 7.
Mtshetsha said he has been working with the actors, providing his input and soaking in the advice and expertise of the various departments that contribute to producing a show.
He has directed numerous plays, and Uloyiko received eight nominations at this year’s Zabalaza Festival and won best ensemble at the festival.
Fugard Theatre executive director Daniel Galloway said: “We are delighted to have Siphelo with us.
“In the short time he has been here, he has proven himself ready to learn and to contribute wherever he can. We look forward to the rest of his time with us and who knows, perhaps even seeing him directing a show for us at the Fugard down the line.”
Tickets for Significant Other can be booked at the Fugard Theatre box office on 021 461 4554 or through the Fugard Theatre’s website at www.thefugard.com.
