Frank Paco Quintet at the Olympia Bakery in Kalk Bay

- Staff Writer

MOZAMBICAN drumming legend Frank Paco and his quintet are set to play at the Olympia Bakery in Kalk Bay on Sunday.

The show includes Naledi Masilo on vocals, Buddy Wells on sax, Peter Ndlala on bass and Brathew van Schalkwyk on keyboard.

With a sub-Saharan jazz flavour, the Frank Paco Quintet will also perform with Adelia Douw on vocals.

The performance will be an amalgamation of Western, Eastern and southern African pulsating rhythms, spiced with harmonic and melodic nuances with improvisation that best defines the genre of jazz.

Frank’s concept is constantly evolving, allowing room for collaborative expression with some of the finest musicians. Paco began playing drums when he was 11 in Mozambique.

He started using drums made from oil canisters – such was the shortage of musical instruments in what was then a war-torn country.

From these humble beginnings, his career has been meteoric and seen him perform with some of the world’s top musical performers.

In the 46664 Nelson Mandela Aids benefit concert in 2004, he performed a drum duet with Roger Taylor and shared the stage with Queen’s Bryan May, Bono, Peter Gabriel, Jimmy Cliff and Johnny Clegg.

He has also conducted international performances with Nat Adderley Junior (US), Ronny Jordan (UK), the Ananda Project (US), Monique Bingham (US), Lokua Khanza (France/Congo), Jonathan Butler, Joe McBride (US), Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Ivan Mazuze and Jimmy Dludlu, among others.

Frank also co-founded Tucan Tucan, Virtual Jazz Reality, Loading Zone (together with Jimmy Dludlu and John Hassan) and Uhambo (a collaboration between South African, Danish and Norwegian artists).

Meanwhile, promoting jazz with a message, Sophie Nzayisenga from Rwanda and Jeremy Danneman will play at the Holocaust Museum this Sunday from 2-4pm for Genocide Commemoration, followed by a further four shows at other Cape Town venues.

More information about their upcoming shows can be found on the Slow Life Facebook page.
