Why I am an African

- Happy Africa Day Leslie Hess Lotus River

WHAT makes me an African … I’ll tell you, Lots of things! 1) I’m not white or black, or even in Between, I’m African, It’s what I am, 2) Perhaps it’s the way I speak Or the way I walk or the way I dress, Could it be Pride maybe? Yes, I take pride in being an African, Proud of this Great Land of Mine, 3) I paint my face, I love to dance, I work, I play, I like watching others play, Because I’m African, 4) I’m not Algerian, Egyptian or Namibian,

Or even Libyan, Congolese or Moroccan,

Nor Zambian, not even South African,

I’m African, She’s my Mother, I am her Son. 5) I Love being African… For many reasons, I love the way the sun shines on me, The Savannah, where lion, elephant, zebra, giraffe all roam,

There is also the desert that is Home to Others, 6) The Majestic Mounts, Snow even falls on some of them, The Rains comes too, Thunder crashes, the brilliant bursts of Lightning, The heavens open up, And wash this land clean, 7) Africa! Land of Contrast, Land of Conflict,

Where ancient meets modern, East meets West Small towns, little villages, Big cities, so modern, yet so timeless,

Melting Pot or Cradle of Civilisation perhaps? 8) The colonists were here, Maybe some of their blood runs through my veins, They tried to change Africa, Maybe they succeeded, maybe not, Africa is still changing. 9) No matter the harvest be good or poor, No matter drought or flood, No matter I live in a tent or hut, Or shack or a mansion, I am a son of the soil, IT’S WHAT MAKES ME AFRICAN.
