Animation gathers momentum

- Raphael Wolf

A SHORT animation about a puppet show that looks humorously at that time of day when Muslims break their fast and share meals with neighbours in the city continues to gain momentum, hitting more than 5 000 views.

Now the producer of Boeber Night, Malick Abarder, wants to create more shows, but a lack of sponsorship is one of his challenges.

The lyrics were written by Nathier ‘Brutjie’ Adams. The video’s lyrics are set to the music of the late pop-star Michael Jackson’s monster best-selling album Thriller.

The animation’s storyline portrays a Muslim man asking his wife whether the boeber (a popular sweet milk delicacy enjoyed especially midway through Ramadaan) she is preparing is ready to collect.

Responding to him, she assures the impatient, hungry man that it’s almost done and boasts of her reputation of being the best boeber-maker in Cape Town. Abarder, a Rondebosch East visual artist, who also edited Boeber Night, said it was part of 10 episodes that started as a black and white cartoon strip in 2011.

“It’s quite popular and people look forward to the series. It’s popular with people of all religious denominations in the city, because they can relate to the humour in the series.

“We had a black and white cartoon strip and then a colour strip. In 2016 it became puppets and we made it into a video show. We want to do this on a regular basis and that’s why we’re looking for regular sponsors.

“The reason we made the series is that we can have a laugh at our traditions and cultures.”

Abarder said writers of the show, besides himself, include Adams and Shafeeqah Isaacs.
