TELLING a story of far, far away, Wynberg Boys’ and Girls’ High schools together with Dalro present Shrek, The Musical.

With a variety of music genres from pop and rock to classical and rap, with professional costumes sourced from KwaZulu-Natal, the production promises to be one that, in the words of director Krystle Kustanovich “will leave you emotionally filled”.

The Musical is based on the first movie in the Dreamworks trilogy.

However, it is said to give more details about the characters.

Kustanovich said: “It’s a comedy-musical, with a live band, actors, singers and the crew behind the scenes, all sourced from the scholars of Wynberg Boys’ and Girls’ high schools.

‘‘It kicks off from when Shrek himself was still a baby, Donkey giving you all the laughs and Lord Farquaad scheming his way to the throne, until Princess Fiona takes her true form… intriguing, funny and oh so magical.”

Kustanovich has been appointed as the musical director for the show and said “the most amazing thing of this process was how identifiable the characters were for the children and how encouraging the kids were towards each other and with rehearsals”.

The production started in March and is said to not be a normal run-of-the-mill musical.

Kustanovich said the best part was that it had innuendos that would appeal to a mature audience, but also carried a message of acceptance and developing oneself and not allowing anyone to dictate to one who one should be.

“It’s about self-acceptance, self-love and self-discovery.”

It runs for 2 hours 10 minutes, with a 20-minute interval.

The shows will be staged at Wynberg Boys’ High School’s Clegg Hall, and will run on July 28, 29 and 31 and August 2, 4 and 5.

Tickets cost R110 for adults and R70 for students.

They can be bought online from www.webtickets.co.za.
