DA has lost plot with selection of strategist

-

IN MY last letter to you regarding the curious activities of the DA published some six weeks ago, I posed the rhetorical question of whether the DA was not on a path of self-destruction?

A front page article in a Sunday newspaper has served only for me to pose the same question, but in a voice more strident and perplexed, as their strategy in securing another term as the ruling party in the Western Cape deserves very close scrutiny and comment.

It is now alleged (although cagily evaded by DA leadership) that the DA illuminati have, in their supposed wisdom, engaged a self-styled UK political strategist – Sir Lynton Crosby. This gentleman has been extensively used by the ruling Conservative party in the UK, as well as other international political parties, with some credible performances, but also with some howling failures. In short, the Conservative party has reportedly, over the last two years, paid this man a total of £6.5 million to fail!

I would have thought that the most eligible person for any appointment (especially one as crucial as PR and image-building) would be assessed on their most recent and successful achievements, and I wonder then how the righteous Sir Lynton Crosby managed to answer that question?

The DA is clearly in need of some radical remedial action and public engagement, but when it chooses to appoint someone such as this (who we are told will and can charge as much as R1m a day), a new set of queries spring to mind regarding their wisdom? Why choose someone with scant knowledge of the South African political landscape to advise on how best to present oneself, when there are any number of highly competent communication experts with a sound knowledge of our special needs?

What concerns me also is the fact that the DA would so readily consider paying such vast sums of money to anyone when there are no guarantees of success except for the results at the polling stations?

I wonder how many of your readers share the same sentiments? Bob Broom Stanford
