Tutu-Burris bestows College of Magic honours

- Sandiso Phaliso

ARCHBISHOP Emeritus Desmond Tutu’s granddaughter Nyaniso Tutu-Burris has been appointed the ambassador for The College of Magic, the only magical arts organisation in the city.

Tutu-Burris has already been creating all kinds of wonders by bestowing top honours at the organisation’s recent graduation ceremony, according to the college.

Tutu-Burris is the daughter of Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu.

Tutu-Burris awarded top honours and junior magic certificates to the college’s 52 new graduates at a glittering graduation ceremony held at the Nassau Theatre in Newlands earlier this month.

The graduates, who enrolled for the College of Magic’s junior courses have completed 15 weeks of lessons in magic and its allied arts, and performed some classic effects to delighted parents and supporters at the graduation ceremony.

She has been assisting with the roll-out of the college’s rural community programme which teaches card skills, and juggling to disadvantaged school pupils, most recently in Atlantis.

“She is excited to be a part of this amazing initiative and to have been present at the graduation.

“Being able to witness these kids go from shy introverts afraid to draw attention to themselves to suddenly being in the spotlight and commanding the stage like it is their turf is an amazing transformation to see.

“I am really excited to officially start what will hopefully be a long-term relationship with the College of Magic,” said TutuBurris.

The College of Magic, now in its 38th year of teaching the magic theatrical performing arts – including juggling, puppetry, mime and clowning – with a social and life-skills component, to children and adults, is a non-profit organisation based in Claremont.

College chief executive Yolandi van Jaarsveldt said: “Our graduations are always a special occasion for our students but this one was elevated to another level by having Nyaniso Tutu-Burris present their diplomas to them and inspire them with her amazing words.

“We look forward to working with her to share the wonder of magic and inspire more youngsters to realise their dreams through the magical arts.”

She said registration for the second intake was open and lessons will commence on July 21 this year.
