- Staff Writer

VETERAN photojournalist and self-taught photographer, 86-year-old Dr Peter Magubane will showcase 100 of his images of former President Nelson Mandela when his exhibition opens in the city today.

This includes images that have never previously gone on exhibition and is timed for what would have been Madiba’s centenary.

The V&A Waterfront-based Nelson Mandela Gateway to Robben Island plays host to the physical exhibition of the images from today until Sunday, September 30, 2018.

Organisers say thousands of South African and international visitors are expected to converge on the exhibition, which can be viewed daily from 8am until 3pm.

Magubane considers the 100 images on view at the Nelson Mandela Gateway to Robben Island as his most iconic Madiba images.

They are accompanied by captions and narrative in all 11 of South Africa’s official languages.

The translations of the narrative and captions of the images for both the physical and online exhibition are sponsored by Siyabona Africa, a destination marketing company specialising for over two-anda-half decades in the inbound African travel sector.

The physical and online exhibition of Magubane’s Mandela images is organised and sponsored by southafrica. co.za, which launches on the same day as the physical exhibition.

Concurrent to the physical exhibition is the free-to-view online exhibition of Magubane’s images, including those physically being exhibited.

Hans Gerrizen, founder and chief executive of Cape Town headquartered southafrica. co.za and of Siyabona Africa. says: “This exhibition by Dr Magubane serves as a meaningful starting point for inspiring not least young South Africans to ponder on the role they can play in taking South Africa forward as a nation so as to imbue ‘Madiba magic’ in their daily interactions.”

Gerrizen conceptualised southafrica.co.za as an ideal means for South African millennials and rural communities to benefit from the digital age in terms of the web tool’s empowering educational component.

“Notably the youth and rural communities in South Africa have not yet fully unlocked the benefits that the internet owes them in terms of a platform where South Africans from all walks of life can read about our incredible nation in their mother tongue and increase their education,” he said.

“We can only stand to deepen our collective experience of democracy and become a more forward-planning nation if we know facts about our nation’s past and present in everyone’s home language,” he adds.

The Robben Island Museum (RIM) says: “RIM is excited to welcome the opportunity to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s centenary through hosting an exhibition titled: Dr Peter Magubane: the 100 best photo moments with Nelson Mandela.

“We admire and commend Dr Peter Magubane’s contribution to our history and for capturing the masses through his lens to narrate the South African story.”
