SCREEN QUEEN
IN A PROUDLY South African column this week, let us begin with My Kitchen Rules South Africa, which airs on M-Net 101 on Sundays at 6pm.
Last week was the end of round one and saw married couple Tarryn and Diego being the first team to be eliminated, shame.
However, this means student friends Minnie and Tee scraped through by two points, despite having fed judges David Higgs and J’Something, and their guests, dishes made with bottled braai sauce and seasoned with Aromat. These are not necessarily sins in our own kitchens, but really?
In a cooking competition with a R1 million prize?
Watching season two of MKR SA is much like the awfulness of a road accident. It’s so so terrible, but I cannot look away. Surely I’m not the only one who thinks that you never, ever, cook something for a dinner party that you haven’t tried to make at least once before, let alone for an occasion such as this?
And yet, every week so far, the teams have scrambled around their chosen supermarkets looking for last-minute ingredients and hoping out loud they will not mess up their dishes. Thereafter, they go into their kitchens together for even more bumbling and flopping.
And they do mess up their dishes in astonishing displays of unpreparedness. Not one team has served a perfect meal. Also, among the cousins, siblings, friends and moms, who call themselves “soon to be engaged”? Sorry Kim, but if he won’t commit at this point, don’t hold your breath.
This Sunday, we’ll meet group two for another round of potential cooking horror. Representing are engaged couple (Pashi, take note) Dirk and Bahia from somewhere in the Western Cape and Manenberg cousins Ash and Chris. Joining them will be Parkview moms Maj and Joleen, Maritsa and Maradine from Bloem (married), and Jozi food buddies Donald and Luyanda. Adding to its stable of international reality formats, M-Net announced it will be bringing a local version of The Bachelor to our screens next year. Appropriately, the show is scheduled to premiere on February 14, 2019.
Together with production company Rapid Blue, the search for 25 beautiful (although in the same e-mail, the producers swear the only criterion is to be ready for romance) single ladies who are ready to ignite the flame of passion with their Prince Charming – and then become his one and only true love – has begun. Project Runway SA (Mzansi Magic, Tuesday at 9.30pm): Be part of the creativity, tension and drama as aspiring fashion designers compete against each other to create runway-perfect garments restricted by time, materials, and theme. Designs will be judged by Noni Gasa and Rahim Rawjee in
