Pharmacy council stalwart praised for inspiring a generation
THE regulator of the pharmacy profession in South Africa, the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC), is saddened to learn of the passing of its former vice-president, Ms Luleka Nkiseng “Lullu” Peteni, on Monday, July 2.
Ms Peteni was first registered as a pharmacist with the SAPC in 1983.
She served the people of South Africa and the pharmacy profession at large with distinction during her tenure as the vice-president of the SAPC from 2003 until 2008.
While vice-president of the SAPC, Ms Peteni contributed immensely on several SAPC committees, among them the Committee of Formal Inquiry (tasked with ensuring pharmacists’ compliance with legislation, good practice prescripts and professional ethics), the Audit Committee, the Continuing Professional Development Committee and the Executive Committee.
She was also the chairperson of the task team that initiated the development of the Human Resources Plan for Pharmacy.
She was an ardent advocate for the pharmacy profession.
Following her term of office within the SAPC, she continued to serve people by practising in the profession until her passing.
Her passion for ethical conduct and quality care in the pharmacy profession led her to volunteer as an inspector of pharmacy premises for the SAPC.
Ms Peteni’s determination to share her knowledge and inspire the next generation of pharmacists motivated her to become an assessor and evaluator of learning programmes.
Expressing his sadness, Mr Amos Masango, the registrar and chief executive of the South African Pharmacy Council, said Ms Peteni would be greatly missed for her diligence, integrity, and passion for sharing knowledge, “on behalf of the pharmacy profession in South Africa, we extend our condolences to Ms Peteni’s family and friends. She will forever be remembered for her outstanding contribution to pharmacy”. Professor Mano Chetty SAPC President
