How to make the most of your make-up brushes

- Gerry Cupido

MAKE-up is pricey and so are make-up brushes. In fact brushes can sometimes be more expensive than the make-up.

Good brushes are an investment, so it’s important to look after them. Keeping them in good shape allows you to get the most out of them and for a longer time, allowing you to continue creating those flawless looks.

One way to look after your brushes is to keep them clean. How often you should clean your brushes

Ask yourself how often you wash your face. I would hope your response is “twice a day” – once in the morning and then at the end of the day to remove your make-up and impurities in order to prevent breakouts and infections.

Let’s walk through what happens to your skin once you’ve washed your face and applied make-up using your not-so-clean brushes.

When you’re done using them, they are now left with products on the bristles which is left exposed to all kinds of germs for the rest of the day.

By the time you use them again, the germs have multiplied.

Your brushes should be washed daily. But come on, how realistic is that though? I mean who has that kind of time. Especially when you find out just how long it in fact takes to clean them.

Unless you do have the time you’ll be happy to know that twice a week is more than enough.

Let’s get down to operation clean up.

How you should clean your make-up brushes?

What you will need:

All you need you already have in your bathroom.

Water and gentle soap (or mild shampoo if you have that).

How you should wash your make-up tools

Mix soap/shampoo and lukewarm water in the palm of your hand.

Wet the bristles in the soapy mixture. Massage the tips of the bristles in the mixture still in your palm. If it creates foam then you’re doing it too harshly. Be gentle with your brushes.

You will know your bristles are clean when you the water runs clear when you rinse it.

Using a clean towel squeeze out the rest of the water.

At this point it’s important to know that when reshaping the bristles they need to be to the original shape.

The best way to dry your brushes it to place them in the edge of a counter or dry them upside down. This will allow them to keep their shape. It might sound like a long process but it’s well worth it!
