Cape Times

Wheelchair aces deserve praise too

- – Ian Smit, Independent Media Executive Editor, Sport

I AM somewhat disappointed by the news coverage in yesterday’s leading article in the Cape Times (Anderson and other SA aces) and today’s sports page in the hype given to Kevin Anderson and Raven Klassen.

Great as it is deserved but utterly disappointing in that nothing is mentioned about the success of our wheelchair tennis participants at Wimbledon. Surely they deserved some form of recognition?

Did no one notice the success of Kgothatso Montjane, being a wild card entry, reaching the semi-final. She lost out 1-6 5-7 to world number 1 Diede de Groot on her first time there? Did no one notice Lucas Sithole losing the doubles Quad Chair final with his partner 2-6 3-6? Or is it because they didn’t win that they were ignored?

Here we have two South Africans from Soweto overcoming tremendous obstacles and hurdles to achieve the success they did this week that would be of great encouragement to other physical impaired South Africans.

Yet, as mentioned earlier, no praise or acknowledgement is given to them in what they achieved against all odds in getting to Wimbledon… never mind their success.

I am extremely disappointed in the lack of sports coverage by the Cape Times given to these sporting heroes in a community that needs stars such as these with their impairments to be examples of what can be achieved.

I feel that the Cape Times tennis reporters should apologise for ignoring their achievements and hang their heads in shame.

It is easy to climb on the bandwagon of winners, but recognise the success of others who are less fortunate!

By the way, I have no physical impairments! Gerald Browne Thornton

We did not have our own reporter at Wimbledon, but we are working on a feature article on the superb accomplishments of Kgothatso Montjane and Lucas Sithole. Our apologies for the disappointment caused.
