Robben Island hails most famous inmate

-

ROBBEN Island Museum hosted the Robben Island Museum Memorial Lecture in honour of Madiba on Mandela Day 2018. It was an evening to honour Madiba’s values as a leader and his towering legacy.

The keynote speaker at the Lecture was Justice Albert “Albie” Sachs who was appointed by President Nelson Mandela to serve on the newly established Constitutional Court in 1994.

“Some legacies you preserve because they are relics of the past, but the contribution that Mandela made shouldn’t be seen as a relic. We should not preserve the legacy of Nelson Mandela, we should live his legacy. We should live it in everything that we do. Let’s do it together in the spirit of Mandela,” said Justice Sachs.

Guests were enlightened by the stories that Albie shared about his interactions with Madiba.

He spoke about how Mandela tasked him to draft the first Bill of Rights in 1995,which helped shape South Africa’s democracy.

At a world-class heritage site which symbolises the triumph of the human spirit over adversity, the Madiba Memorial Lecture was the first of a series of annual orations dedicated to the lives of different political leaders who were incarcerated on the Island.

“We would like to thank our sponsors our honourable guests, friends of Robben Island Museum and our event sponsors, V&A Waterfront and Table Bay Hotel, for making it the special event that it turned out to be,” said Morongoa Ramaboa, museum spokesperson. “We certainly hope that people took away valuable lessons .”
