KNOWING my mother was in need of a little R&R, there was no better place to escape to for a weekend of solace and recharging than the Drakensberg in KwaZulu-Natal.
Our home for the next two days would be Gooderson Monks Cowl Golf Resort, known for its stupendous views of the magnificent Champagne Valley in the Central Drakensberg.
Although fairly new to the hospitality scene, having opened just three years ago, they have done a superb job in shaping a once popular golf course into a place of comfort and rest.
The resort has 35 superior hotel rooms with mountain- or dam-facing views. Each has two double beds, air conditioning, DStv, teaand coffee-making facilities and a private patio. Our room was spacious and neat, but the decor elements were quite dated and mismatched.
Where they fall short with their furnishings, they bounce back with the well-constructed patio area. Here, guests can enjoy a cuppa while they bask in the serenity around them, watch a game of golf or catch up on some reading.
Those who prefer a “home away from home” atmosphere should check out the self-catering units. There are two bedrooms, a kitchen and lounge area, private patio with braai facilities and gorgeous views of the dam.
Evenings are quite special at the resort. If guests are not cuddling in front of the television, they are most likely to be at Friar Tuck Pub and Restaurant.
The on-site restaurant has a rus. tic, medieval vibe to it. Monks Cowl prides itself on plating some of the most delectable meals.
Popular dishes include their trout, oxtail curry, jalapeño chicken and a range of pizza and pastas. Sadly, the desserts need improvement.
The following morning, after watching the sunrise, we decided to try our hand at golf.

While both my mom and I did not complete the game, it felt great to have a few swings.
There’s plenty of other activities to occupy your time if golf doesn’t tickle your fancy.
Perhaps visit their rock swimming pool complete with waterfall and slide, while the children spend time in the play area with adventure jungle gym, swings and trampolines? Or maybe a game of tennis, badminton, volleyball or swing ball?
There are also fishing spots, mountain bike trails and a pool table. Travellers in search of pampering should visit the on-site spa.
The Drakensberg is home to many adventure activities.
Guests staying more than two days should try their hand at ziplining, white water tubing, hiking, bird watching enjoy a Drakensberg Boys Choir show that takes place every Wednesday.
